Travel insurance is no different than most other types of insurance; nobody really wants to think about it, but everyone really needs it! Simply put, travel insurance gives you cancellation coverage prior to your cruise and (just as important) emergency coverage during your cruise.
Once you've paid the balance of your cruise, or made 'final payment', you are under cancellation penalties by the cruise line. These penalties escalate as your departure date approaches and cruise lines make NO exceptions. For example, at 60-31 days prior, your penalty may be $250 per person. Then at 30-15 days prior, that may increase to 50%; 14-4 days prior it could increase to 75% and within 3 days, there's usually no refund. Travel insurance will cover these penalties as long as your cancellation is for an unforeseen, covered reason. Some insurance companies even waive pre-existing conditions if your insurance is purchased at the time of your cruise deposit. You'll also have the option to purchase the cruise line's insurance or 'protection plan', but an independent insurance company usually has broader coverage for a lesser or close to the same cost.
During your trip, you'll have coverage for lost or delayed baggage, trip delay, trip interruption (in case you should have to leave the ship for an emergency back home), emergency medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, legal assistance, etc. Also, remember that some coverage (such as Medicare) does not cover you once you are outside the United States; check your individual policy to make sure of your coverage.
