It used to be that most cruises were offered as a package including airfare called 'air/sea'. However, times and choices have changed and today the airfare from the cruise lines is usually available as an optional addition to the cruise price. When your cruise is purchased by itself and the airfare is arranged independently, then it's called 'cruise-only'(no airfare is included from the cruise line). So which is right for you?
'Cruise-only'? Well, you are completely in control. Think of it as sort of a la carte traveling. You can select your own airline and flight schedule at whatever price or frequent flyer award level you choose (this could be the perfect opportunity to cash-in those hard-earned frequent flyer miles!). Sometimes you get a better airfare this way; sometimes you don't. You'll have to get your own transfer from the airport to the ship once you arrive (or purchase it separately from most cruise lines). The most important disadvantage is unlikely, but must be considered - should your independently arranged flight run late and you miss the ship, you'll be completely on your own to cover the expense to catch-up with the ship at its first port. (If you go 'air/sea', the cruise line usually works with the airline to get you to the ship.)
'Air/sea' packages have some advantages. Sometimes the airfare from the cruise line is lower than you could secure direct from the airline and the transfers from the airport to pier (and return) will ususally be included. However, there are some disadvantages, too. First, you will have no choice as to the airline or the schedule you fly (unless you pay an additional surcharge offered by most cruise lines). Next you'll find that your actual flight itinerary will not be available to you until about 30 days prior to your cruise and many of the best seat assignments on the plane are gone by that time! Also, cruise line airfares are non-published 'contract rates' and you cannot use your frequent flyer miles to upgrade those tickets (an important item especially if you are flying, say, to Europe).
